Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
