A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
