Agencies in the island state are working to identify a magenta ooze that has appeared on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an algal bloom.
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of a coastal area about 60km south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on areas of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Samples have been taken and sent to the environmental agency for testing. A official commented that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in minerals, heat, rain or illumination".
"The events are occasionally called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water crimson," the official added. "Not all algae outbreaks are toxic, with several kinds acting as a key source of energy for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of reddish water in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."
Algae outbreaks happen naturally but their occurrence has grown in the past few years, partly due to climate change and environmental waste that merge to create nutrient-rich waters primed for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that interferes with the healthy balance of aquatic systems.
These phenomena have been compared to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as the environment is suitable. In more extreme scenarios, sensitive marine ecosystems can be wiped out as sea creatures is eliminated or deprived of oxygen, supplying more food for the outbreak.
Another region recently grappled with a severe algal bloom along its southern coastline after a string of marine heatwaves, which spread across a vast area. The bloom left swimmers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
Faith Coleman, who was involved in studying the beginning of that outbreak said, based on photos of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are numerous of these events around Tasmania of late," she remarked.
The expert said this organism did not produce harmful substances comparable to the type involved in that devastating outbreak, but it does consume small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.
"Typically one notices a bloom of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or for example a fish reproduction," she added.
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, referring to similar cases overseas.
"Therefore the state needs to issue a strong warning here, the authorities and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the public here," she stated.
She stated she had anxieties for people's well-being after noticing a numbness along her arms and face while being sprayed with tainted seawater.
An conservation group has reported lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a prominent conservationist calling the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and demanding the government head to visit and "lead the response that authorities must be doing".
"The leader needs to understand this is a catastrophe in the making, commercially as well as environmentally."
Talking with reporters, the premier stated he was not aware of any relationships between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was needed before judgments could be made.
"We need to ensure our waterways are environmentally safe and viable," he added.
"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our treasures and we need to guarantee the public and our economy can operate side-by-side to enjoy our waterways productively and in a lasting way."
