Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences growing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes the determined fighter (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the events of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team understands precisely where to head next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the enemy for his own means, invading the hidden lair, attacking the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then settled his debts and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as important members in House Halovar could enable the group access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to travel to Timmony in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
