Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
